third way governments turn the power off John Bolton’s been seen holding a clipboard and I don’t want to find you I just want to look just to walk behind you I’ve been recognized — we’ll all be one day I need ¥400,000 to get off this runway I don’t want to find you I just want to look as we walk behind you who is the word? who is the book? listen to me now before I give up before I’m bought out in the moment of reaction listen to me now — listen to me now we just want to stop the world from bleeding I don’t want to watch it burn, not really but history wants repeating and I’ll never learn I will never learn so let the roaring crowd remind you warm wind off the blade I don’t want to find you but it’s the only way

Boatmates! 03:02
I didn’t understand what they were asking I realized I’d been crossing my legs probably should not have blurted out "I’ll see you fuckers in the Hague" when words fail, you fail, instinct takes over won’t be long til the pain’s gone, and I’ll be that much stronger they asked about my fellow travelers but it didn’t translate right then they actually tried to hypnotize me where’d you get these fucking guys? when words fail, you fail, instinct takes over electrode on my tongue, well dude, have fun I’ll be that much stronger when you’re done we’ve climbed the barricade and scorched the valley linked arms and jumped across the alley smiled the smile of the condemned when words fail, you fail, that’s when I take over so kill me! you’ll see, I’ll be that much stronger when you do throw down our guns to cross a limitless ocean —my companions and my friends

you said online this will all come crashing down, last lights are going out, well I hope you’re right cause I’m about to lose a finger so might as well lose everything I left one glove on the orange line northbound ran through downtown missed the same train by a blink then descended into madness that’s when you called with your voice sounding bad, slurring there’s nothing wrong if you don’t want to be sober, who would want go clear eyed through this life? until it’s over just do what you have to do I lied and told my friends I’d be moving to Chicago then I did move to Chicago so I guess the joke’s on them but I don’t have an opinion, I just have a library card and I lied about my plan: I didn’t want to live so imagine my dismay when I wake up every day in the electric glow of an indifferent world train wheels sparking in the snow-oh-oh-oh why ask me for advice? I don’t know. do coke, stay up all night, if it keeps you stringing the hours along... you are so strong, I am so proud of you however it shakes out, still true, do what you have to do

A Breeze 03:53
precise in all things great and small kick quantized, tie centered, beard frozen big western rose in the buttonhole of a coat that screams ‘serious person’ strip mall masa on the air forgetting what you’re doing there as the bus just passes by a breeze in winter’s still a breeze high or low tide, it’s still the sea everything is what it seems to be and that’s easy you lose a few friends in the mud, tour cancelled, season suspended say you’ll feel better when you feel better when all the weird shit’s ended but maybe it will never end with signs and wonders flooding in each day unlike the last chorus copyright the morning sun charge a fee for everyone but this dim light is my light like a breeze in winter’s still a breeze like a tree stands tall without its leaves the seasons pass, well, seems to me that's easy

Hey there. Uh: it's me. I'm in Otago tonight. It's cold here. I forgot, like I always forget, that when I crossed from north to south of the equator I'd be crossing from summer into winter too. I'd dressed for Shenyang - the summer, the oppressive heat, the monsoon - because I thought (idiotically, seems to me now, but there it is) I'd be staying there a while. I would not be staying there a while. I didn't even pack a sweater when I left San Francisco. The taxi was idling outside and the sweaters were in a box under the bed. I went through security in swim trunks.

San Francisco - the heatwave - the taxi - seems like a million years ago. That reminds me. In the airport (I can't remember, did I tell you this already?) my phone alarm went off. I'd set it years in advance. That was the day the Unix time lined up perfectly with the calendar time, month day and year. I looked at the phone like huh? and didn't realize til I was on the plane what I meant by "UNIX DAY". But it was all for the good, as they say: because I remembered I needed to ditch the phone. I threw it in some guy's bag who was boarding for Miami. I hope nothing bad ever happened to that guy.

"UNIX DAY". When I put that note in my google calendar in some hotel bar at the first national convention it felt like that day would never roll around. But we kept stringing it along, from Chicago to New York to Montreal et cetera, restless then cagey then covert. The Summer of Hate, San Francisco, the end of the line. Something kind of poetic in there somewhere. You feel pity for yourself in old age.

Well and Shenyang, at least what little I saw of it, seemed mainly to consist of Soviet-style apartment blocks. It wasn't super exiting skyline-wise. I tried to go out and see some temples but the first day I left the hotel I found when I got back that someone had rifled through my stuff. So I guess I didn't really have time to get a feel for Shenyang.

Do you get these messages? Can't imagine you do. Where did you wind up? Hope you're somewhere warmer than this. Hope you're somewhere it's safe to wear red.

I'm going to go up into Central Otago tomorrow. It's colder there in winter but there's apparently almost nobody there and what people are there don't even use email yet. There are vineyards, mountains and lakes, probably a little cottage somewhere I can fix up. People will probably want to know what an American's doing around here with all this money. I'll tell them I founded a tech company and sold it off to a VC firm. They won't ask too many questions.
